GENERAL DIRECTIONS FOR ECO-ACTIVITIES

SEPTEMBER 20th

Activities will begin at 1:00pm and end at approximately 3:30/4:00pm.

Please bring your event ticket stub for admission to the activity you selected in advance.  Each activity is limited to 12 people.

Arrive about 12:45pm at the Pine Grove Community Center parking lot, 298 Laneda Ave in Manzanita for carpooling to the location of each respective activity, except for the Wildlife Photography activity, which will meet at Alder Creek Farm.  Alder Creek Farm is located at the end of Underhill Lane, between Nehalem and Manzanita, off Hwy 101, near Corkrey’s Storage and Laundry.

Dress for the weather; bring a sturdy pair of hiking shoes and a camera (optional).  Snacks and water are optional, but advised for the hikes.

If you have any questions, please contact the LNCT office by email or phone.

#1 Neah-kah-nie Mountain Hike

Neah-Kah-Nie Mountain is located about 2 miles north of Manzanita.  The 1697-foot mountain has a 1.5 mile trail to the summit from the south trailhead, estimated time of 1.5 - 2 hours. This hike is considered moderate to difficult with switchbacks and elevation gain.  This hike is the most challenging of the activities and may take up to 2.5 hours to complete.  Mike and Sally Vanebo will guide the group on our local mountain icon.

#2 Soapstone Lake Hike

Soapstone Lake is a rarity in the Coast Range -- a lake that hasn't turned into a meadow. The process, called meadow-fication, may indeed be complete in another thousand years or so.  The trail goes through a little meadow, bordered with berry bramble, alders and birch trees and several flower varieties before arriving at the lake.  The trail to Soapstone Lake is 1.5 miles long.  This hike is very easy and gently graded. Abby and Dan Spotsky will be your leaders.

#3 The Nehalem Estuary, A Historical Perspective

Gareth Ferdun and Mark Beach will use NOAA maps and Army Corps of Engineers aerial photos to demonstrate how the estuary has changed since the 1890’s.  A visit to the estuary will follow the power point presentation.

#4 Wildlife Photography Walk/Workshop at Alder Creek Farm

Bring a camera and tour Alder Creek Farm taking pictures of one of the Lower Nehalem Community Trust properties with photographer Cheryl Siler. This activity will emphasize how to enhance your wildlife photography.  The focus will be on how to frame a shot, not on learning all the components of an individual’s camera.  This activity will meet at Alder Creek Farm.

#5 Local Farms Tour

Come and see what, how, and where local foods are produced.  The three farms selected for the tour share a common goal of using sustainable practices.  These farms include a diverse group of farming practices within a small geographic area. Vivi Tallman, an LNCT board member, will lead this activity.

  • Luna Sea Farm - Hank Tallman has an emphasis on growing foods locally and sells his products at Mother Nature’s and at the Farmer’s Market in Manzanita.  Luna Sea Farms produces strawberries, culinary herbs, vegetables, and value added products.
  • Kingfisher Farms - Jeff Trenary has been growing organically for over 10 years.  He has been implementing a biodynamic system.   Kingfisher Farms specializes in vegetables, orchard fruit, and value added products.
  • Onion Peak Dairy - The dairy is owned and operated by Mike Grauwen.  Milk produced by the Holstein and Jersey cows is organic with a daily rotation into “greener pastures”.  Mike’s innovative approach to farming can be both seen and heard by attending this tour.

#6 Nehalem Bay State Park Interpretive Tour

Join Nehalem Bay State Park ranger Shelly Parker for a journey back in time to our state's early beginnings and beyond.  First we will experience the Arch Cape cannon discovery and find out how it relates to the time of the Oregon Country.  Next we will learn about the Native American heritage in our area and what steps are being taken to tell the story at the park.
