Estuary Focus Area

The National Land Trust Alliance in its Standards and Practices recommends that a local trust identify “specific natural resources or geographic areas where it will focus its work” and establish “a defined process for selecting land and easement projects, including written selection criteria that are consistent with its mission.”

The Lower Nehalem Community Trust, recognizing the ecological value of lands around the estuary, chose this region as one area of focus for its work. The Trust intends to work with willing landowners, governmental agencies and other environmental groups to find ways to protect and preserve the most important environmental resources adjacent to the estuary.

Specifically, the Trust wishes to protect and preserve

  • Estuarine wetlands,
  • Sitka Spruce swamps,
  • Estuarine streams critical to the survival of chum salmon,
  • Estuarine sloughs utilized by coho salmon as rearing habitat,
  • Critical habitat for migrating birds,
  • Estuarine habitat critical to the survival of rare, endangered or
sensitive plant and animal species, and
  • Land adjacent to property currently preserved for wildlife including
land next to its current holdings.
